Nigeria is certainly becoming an important part of the global economy. 1. Chevron, a global oil company, is one of Nigeria’s biggest investors. Its Nigerian branch employs about 3,100 workers and 3,500 contractors, and many of them are Nigerian.

2. GE (General Electric) is a services, advanced technology, and finance company, has energy and oil & gas facilities in Lagos. GE has been around for 130 years, and has had a presence in Africa for over one hundred years.

3. ConocoPhillips  is an integrated energy company, with branches in over 30 countries and about 260,000 employees. In 2010, the Nigerian branch produced 44 MBOED (Million Barrels Oil Equivalent per Day).

4. GM Nigeria  was started in 1991 as a merge of General Motors (GM, based in Detroit, Michigan, USA) and UACN Plc. GM Nigeria is very important in the Nigerian automobile market, especially with their Chevrolet trucks and Isuzu Pickups.

5. Citigroup Inc. has been working in Nigeria since 1984. They currently have thirteen branches and about 300 employees in the country. Originally called Nigeria International Bank Limited, it was officially renamed Citibank Nigeria Limited (Citi Nigeria) in 2008.

6. IBM opened their office in Nigeria in 2009, but has had a presence in Western Africa for more than fifty years. Baby Cloud Technology, a completely portable computing system in a small box, was created in Lagos. Baby Cloud has been transformative, as it allows users to receive IBM’s online services and resources anywhere.

7. Microsoft  was started in 1975 and quickly became a leader in the development of computers worldwide. Microsoft has locations all ove the world, including Lagos, Nigeria.

8. Xerox has had a presence in Nigeria since 1974 and is headquartered in Lagos. It has undergone several leadership and name changes, and in 2003 it finally became XHS (Nigeria) Unlimited. 9. EMC Corporation was founded in 1979, and since then has grown to become a huge international company, with a presence in eighty countries. EMC creates information infrastructure, and assists companies in protecting, organizing, and utilizing their information.

11. Hewlett-Packard (HP) was founded in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard in California, US. HP is the largest IT company in the world, with revenue of $126 billion in 2010. HP works in over 170 countries in the world, including Nigeria.

12. AECOM  provides technical and management support services across many different markets. AECOM works in 125 countries, and Fortune 500 has called it one of America’s largest companies. AECOM has been working in Africa since the 1960s, and now has a location in over 30 African countries.

13. Qualcomm was started in 1985 as a seven person operation, and grew to becom a global communications company.
